Japan National Health Insurance (NHI) for Students

Health insurance is mandatory in Japan. We explain how to sign up, how much it costs, and how to get the student discount.
In Japan, if you get sick, you don't go bankrupt. Thanks to the National Health Insurance (NHI).
Is it Mandatory?
Yes. All residents (including students) on a visa longer than 3 months MUST enroll.
How it Works
- Coverage: You pay 30% of the medical bill. The government pays 70%.
- Example: A doctor's visit costs 5,000 JPY. You pay 1,500 JPY.
The Cost (Student Discount)
- Premiums are based on your previous year's income in Japan.
- Since you are a student with $0 income, you qualify for a massive reduction.
- Cost: Approx. 1,500 - 2,000 JPY / month in most wards.
How to Enroll
Go to your local City Hall (Ward Office) with your Residence Card and Passport. Do this within 14 days of moving in.
Warning
If you don't pay, you cannot renew your visa. Immigration checks your tax and insurance payment history.
