The Rules
- Permission: You need the "Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted under the Status of Residence Previously Granted" stamp on your residence card. (Get this at the airport!).
- Hours: Max 28 hours per week. (40 hours during long school holidays).
Best Jobs by Japanese Level
Zero Japanese / N5
- Uber Eats: Flexible, no talking required.
- Hotel Cleaning: Bed making. Hard work, but pays okay.
- Factory Work: Bento factories. Night shifts pay 25% more.
N4 / N3 (Conversational)
- Konbini (7-Eleven/Lawson): The classic student job. You learn polite Japanese (Keigo).
- Restaurant Kitchen: Washing dishes and simple prep.
- English Teaching: Private lessons or Eikaiwa cafes. High pay (2,000 - 3,000 JPY/hour).
N2 / N1 (Fluent)
- Hotel Front Desk: High status.
- Sales Assistant: Uniqlo, Yodobashi Camera.
Minimum Wage
In Tokyo, it's around 1,113 JPY / hour (2024). Don't accept less.
