Japan Connectivity:
SIM vs Pocket WiFi
Free WiFi in Japan is getting better, but it's still not reliable enough for navigation. You NEED your own connection. Here are the best options.

01. eSIM (Best Overall)
If your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM (iPhone XS or newer), this is the easiest option. No physical card to lose, instant activation.
Ubigi
Best coverage (Docomo network). Fast and reliable. App is easy to use.
Airalo
Very popular, slightly cheaper than Ubigi, but sometimes slower (Softbank network).
02. Pocket WiFi (Best for Groups)
A small router you carry with you. Connect up to 10 devices.
- Pros: Unlimited data (usually), shareable with friends/family, works with locked phones.
- Cons: Another device to charge and carry. Pick up/return at airport required.
- Recommended: Ninja WiFi or Sakura Mobile.
03. Physical SIM
Good if your phone is unlocked but doesn't support eSIM. You can buy these at Bic Camera or Yodobashi Camera in Japan, or order online (Mobal, Sakura Mobile) to pick up at the airport.
