Kyoto vs Osaka:
The Golden Route
They are only 15 minutes apart by Shinkansen, but worlds apart in culture. The traditional heart of Japan vs the neon kitchen of the nation.
01. Kyoto Highlights
The former capital for over 1000 years. It's where you go for temples, shrines, and Geisha culture.
Fushimi Inari
The thousands of orange Torii gates. Hike to the top for a view of the city.
Kiyomizudera
The wooden stage temple. Stunning views, especially in autumn.
Arashiyama
The bamboo grove. Visit early (7 AM) to avoid the crowds.
Kinkakuji
The Golden Pavilion. It's literally covered in gold leaf.
02. Osaka Highlights
Loud, friendly, and obsessed with food. Osaka is the rebellious younger brother to Kyoto's strict older sister.
- Dotonbori
The neon heart of Osaka. The Glico Man sign and giant crab restaurants.
- Osaka Castle
A modern reconstruction, but the park and walls are impressive.
- Shinsekai
Retro-futuristic district. Great for Kushikatsu (fried skewers).
