University of Tokyo: How to Get In as a Foreigner

Todai is the Harvard of Japan. We explain the PEAK program (English) and the regular admission route (Japanese).

Getting into the University of Tokyo (Todai) is the ultimate flex. But how do you do it?

Route A: PEAK (English Program)

  • Programs: "Japan in East Asia" and "Environmental Sciences".
  • Admission: Document screening + Interview. No Japanese required.
  • Scores: You need near-perfect SAT, IB, or A-Level scores.
  • Acceptance Rate: Very low.

Route B: Regular Admission (Japanese)

  • Step 1: Score high on the EJU (Japanese, Math, Science).
  • Step 2: Pass the TOEFL.
  • Step 3: Pass the Todai entrance exam (Written exam in Japanese).
  • Difficulty: Extreme. You are competing against the smartest Japanese students.

Tips

  • Research: If applying for Grad School, contact a professor before applying.
  • MEXT: Many international students enter Todai as MEXT scholars.
