Japan is slowly rolling out its e-Visa system. But can students use it? Here is how to apply for Japan student visa online.
Current Status (2026)
- Tourist Visas: widely available online for many nationalities.
- Student Visas: Limited availability. Most applicants still need to visit the embassy in person.
Who Can Apply Online?
- Citizens of specific countries (check the MOFA website).
- Those who have already received their Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) electronically.
The Process
- Get CoE: Your school applies for this in Japan. They email you the "Digital CoE".
- Create Account: Go to the "Japan e-Visa" website.
- Upload: Upload your photo, passport scan, and Digital CoE.
- Pay: Pay the visa fee online (Credit Card).
- Receive: You get a "Visa Issuance Notice" (PDF) on your phone. You show this at the airport. No sticker in your passport!
If You Cannot Apply Online
You must print your Digital CoE and take it to the Japanese Embassy/Consulate in your country.
