CoE (Certificate of Eligibility) Japan Application Explained

Table of Contents
The CoE is the most important document you will ever need. We explain what it is, how to get it, and what to do if it is denied.
The Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) is not a visa. It is a "pre-approval" from the Ministry of Justice in Japan. Without it, you cannot get a student visa.
How to Apply
You cannot apply for a CoE yourself. Your school acts as your proxy.
- You send documents to the school.
- The school checks them.
- The school submits them to Immigration in Japan.
- Immigration issues the CoE.
- The school sends the CoE to you.
Digital CoE vs Paper CoE
- Old Way: A physical paper certificate mailed to you (slow, risk of loss).
- New Way (2024+): A PDF sent via email. You just print it out. Much faster.
Validity
- The CoE is valid for 3 months. You must apply for your visa within this time.
Denials
If your CoE is denied, Immigration usually gives a code explaining why.
- Code 6: Financial ability not proven.
- Code 3: Past visa violations.
- Code 1: Documents not credible (fake diploma).
Conclusion
Trust your school. They do this every day. Send them exactly what they ask for.
